Light has made me ponder life and the universe, since early childhood.
Ever since I discovered my first star in the night sky and became aware of the universe above my head, all words fall short, when I think of light. The plasticity of light is mesmerizing and mind-blowing. A “material” that is transparent, weightless in your hand, slips between your fingers, but can slice steel, cut diamonds, heal wounds, permeate volcanoes and travel to the edge of cosmos, is not only remarkable and priceless, but it is also a wonder of the universe, yet an everyday thing. Light has captured human imagination across space and time. It has generated a stream of religious and scientific ideas and fueled a flurry of artistic creativity. In photography, capturing light has become the essence of the art form. Blinded by time-honored narratives, the photographer has come to believe that she/he can capture light, but that is just wishful thinking. In truth, light captures the heart and mind of the photographer, seduces her/him with its beauty and entices her/him to take a picture of it. That is my journey with light.
In my work, I explore the plasticity of natural light as it travels through the universe, particularly in in my work with Flowers of Light and in Seamless Boarders. In Flowers of Light, I focus on natural light as my model, rather than using it as an accessory to illuminate my subjects. To that end, I bend the light entering my camera chamber in a fraction of a second, by twisting the camera, thereby transforming the light inside into flowers, plants, water, sculptures, textiles, bubbles, and other earthly images. No photoshopping or other software manipulations used. As a result, a palette of colors and textures with a smoothness and an intensity I had before never seen, and more intriguing than a photo filter could produce. In light, I have come to see everything – The beginning of life and its potential end or continuation, and the complexity of the universe. I wish I could sleep in the linen of light, listen to its stories about other galaxies, their stars, their planets, their moons, and about life, love, and laughter there. I wish I could wake up to the songs of light, and learn about the sources of knowledge, peace, love, and laughter in the universe. I invite the viewer to ponder light, and travel in its footsteps as far as her/his imagination will carry.
